Many people refer to android versions by “codenames” instead of version numbers (e.g. android “Gingerbread”). What are the names of the various versions of the android OS, and the way these names chosen.

Each version of android since 1.5 has been developed with a selected codename. These codenames are chosen ALPHABETICALLY, and have so far all been dessert items (or, generically, sweet/sugary foods). Some codenames are related to quite one version range, whereas others are restricted to solely a selected one, and also the reason for this inconsistency isn’t presently best-known. The naming usually seems to correspond to changes within the developer API levels, however this is often not perpetually true (example: 3.0 and 3.1 are each “Honeycomb” however they need totally different API levels).
The following names are used for the presently existing android releases. Note that versions 1.0 and 1.1 weren’t publicly named. However, Android 1.1 was internally stated as “Petit-Four”
